The IT Forum: Net Neutrality Revisited

<p>It is great to have NaSPA articles published online. This gives readers the opportunity to provide instant feedback and interact with others online. </p> <p>Net Neutrality continues to be a controversial issue these days. It is sometimes shadowed by so many other things grabbing for our attention. To keep everyone up to date on this issue, I thought it might be useful to re-visit some of the key websites covering Net Neutrality. We have covered these sites in prior issues of <em>Technical Support</em>. </p> <p><strong>First Visit - Hands off the Internet</strong></p> <p><a href="http://www.handsoff.org/">http://www.handsoff.org</a></p> <p>This group is against having net neutrality regulations. This site now has five videos you can play on your computer to learn more about their cause. To help navigate around the website, Handsoff.org has a search box on the top of the screen to help you look for articles/blogs based on keywords. They also have a feature where you can view archives from prior postings based on prior dates and subject areas. You can also sign up with them to receive email updates on their activities. </p> <p>Their membership is growing and becoming quite diversified. Below is an excerpt from their site that is their mission statement - </p> <p><em>&quot;</em><strong>Hands Off The Internet</strong> is a nationwide coalition of Internet users, manufacturers and network operators united in the belief that the Net&#39;s phenomenal growth over the past decade will continue if government does not attempt an unwise effort to regulate a market that is otherwise working to give consumers the choices, freedom, prices and diverse experiences they desire in the new age of the Internet.<em>&quot;</em></p> <p>If you want to know about the other member organizations, you can find that on the website under the heading &quot;About&quot; and then under &quot;Member Organizations.&quot;</p> <p>Many of us hardly have enough time to keep up with things as it is, let alone analyze the details of something like net neutrality. This site provides a listing of quick fact files to explain their views. Below is a list of PDF files you can get from their site - </p> <ul class="unIndentedList"><li> <a href="http://www.handsoff.org/hoti_docs/quick_facts/existing_regulations.pdf">Why Existing Laws Already Protect Net Users</a> (pdf)<br /> Don&#39;t believe the rhetoric! Find out about federal laws that provide Net users with strong consumer protections while online. </li> <li><a href="http://www.handsoff.org/hoti_docs/quick_facts/internet_capacity.pdf">The Internet At Capacity</a> (pdf)<br /> With the growth in data traffic approaching 60 percent annually, there&#39;s urgent need for new investment. Take a look at how much content large Internet companies are pushing onto the web. </li> <li><a href="http://www.handsoff.org/hoti_docs/quick_facts/job_growth.pdf">The Impact on Job Growth</a> (pdf)<br /> The nation&#39;s leading communications union, whose members are on the front lines of today&#39;s high-speed deployment, sees new regulations as a threat to job growth. Here&#39;s why. </li> <li><a href="http://www.handsoff.org/hoti_docs/quick_facts/NN_and_online_hate.pdf">Curbing Online Violence</a> (pdf)<br />In Canada, hate group websites target a well-known civil rights lawyer and his family with calls to violence. Find out how Canada&#39;s neutrality laws interfere as he attempts to keep his family safe. </li> </ul> <p><strong>Second Visit - Save the Internet</strong></p> <p>http://www.savetheinternet.org</p> <p>This group favors having net neutrality regulations. This site, much like Handsoff.org, also has videos you can play on your computer to learn more about their views. They have quite a few video entries from YouTube.com. The site includes an interactive map of the United States. You can click on a state and find out where your Senator stands on this topic. You can also get a complete listing of all the senators and tally their votes. This site now has an online petition you can sign. So far, as of this writing, the site has 1,692,399 who have signed the petition. </p> <p>The site has another feature where you can tell your story about how net neutrality has affected you. The homepage at this sites flashes sample stories. Everyone is invited to submit a story of their own to the site. For those who favor net neutrality regulations, you can link your webpage to theirs to show your support. The site has html files you can copy to your homepage. If you want a quick overview on their view on Net Neutrality, I would recommend going to the section of their homepage labeled &quot;What&#39;s Net Neutrality.&quot; In this section, they have Frequently Asked Questions that summarize their views. </p> <p>Below is an excerpt from their mission statement - </p> <p>&quot;The SavetheInternet.com Coalition is more than a million everyday people who have banded together with thousands of non-profit organizations, businesses and bloggers to protect Internet freedom. </p> <p>The <a href="http://www.savetheinternet.com/=principles">Coalition believes</a> that the Internet is a crucial engine for economic growth and free speech. We are working together to urge Congress to preserve Network Neutrality, the First Amendment of the Internet, which ensures that the Internet remains open to new ideas, innovation and progress.&quot;</p> <p><strong>Closing Thoughts </strong></p> <p>Now that we are online, please share your thoughts and insights on Net Neutrality by posting a comment here on NaSPA.com.
